Brazil: Paraguay may be suspended from Mercosur

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Brazil's foreign minister says he and other Mercosur ministers are recommending that Paraguay be suspended from the regional trade bloc over last week's ouster of former President Fernando Lugo.

But Antonio Patriota says that regional foreign ministers meeting at the Mercosur summit in Mendoza, Argentina plan to recommend against economic sanctions in retaliation for the ouster. Patriota told a small group of journalists on Thursday outside the closed-door meetings that he could not give any further details about Paraguay's possible suspension, nor say how long it might last.

Mercosur's final decision on what to do about Paraguay is expected to be announced Friday following a meeting of regional heads of state. The bloc barred Lugo's replacement, Federico Franco, from attending the meetings.

Mercosur also groups Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
