Brazil official criticizes Israel's choice for ambassador

Published January 20, 2016

Associated Press

The Brazilian president's special adviser on foreign affairs has spoken out against Israel's nomination of a former leader of the West Bank settler movement to be the new ambassador to Brazil.

Marco Aurelio Garcia told the state-run TV Brazil channel the nomination of Dani Dayan was a "false step."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nominated Dayan to be his envoy to Brazil last August, but Brazilian officials have not yet responded. They also have not commented on the reasons behind the delay.

But Garcia said Tuesday that Dayan is known to hold opinions contrary to two very important points of Brazilian policy — its condemnation of the West Bank settler movement and support of a future Palestinian state.

Dayan is a former chairman of a council representing West Bank settlers.
