Bolivia slide claims 400 homes

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

Bolivian authorities say a landslide triggered by heavy rains on the eastern edge of La Paz has now destroyed more than 400 homes in nine poor neighborhoods.

City spokesman Edwin Herrera says there have been no fatalities in the slow-moving slide, which began last weekend.

It has left more than 100,000 people without running water.

Bolivia's capital sits below a high-altitude plateau and is surrounded by unstable hills.

Displaced residents continued to pick through rubble and recover belongings on Wednesday. Some searched for remains of loved ones in an affected cemetery.

Thousands are being housed temporarily in schools and on sports fields.
