BMW recalls 232,000 cars in China with possible engine fault; checking other countries

German automaker BMW says it is recalling 232,000 vehicles in China after identifying a problem with a bolt used in the engine, and says it is now checking whether the same defect can also be found in other countries.

BMW said in a statement Thursday that in "very rare cases" one of four bolts holding on the cover to the engine's variable camshaft timing system breaks, which then can cause other bolts to fail. That means oil begins to leak out of the unit, causing the timing system to become sluggish, and eventually could lead to complete engine failure.

BMW says it has received no reports of any accidents related to the issue. It affects six-cylinder gas-powered motors in models built from June 2009 to June 2013.
