Blast kills 2 Tunisian soldiers, wounds 4 in latest incident on Mount Chaambi

Published January 08, 2015

Tunisia's Ministry of Defense says two soldiers were killed and four others wounded by a blast on a mountain near the border with Algeria.

Defense spokesman Taoufik Rahmouni said the soldiers' armored vehicle hit a mine, instantly killing one man and wounding the others. One of the wounded later died of his injuries.

Since December 2012, Tunisian troops have been combing Mount Chaambi, near the city of Kasserine, after it was discovered that al-Qaida-linked groups had set up a base on its rugged slopes.

At least 20 soldiers have been killed in various operations on the mountain.

A new operation aiming to clear the militants out of the area has been in place in the past month.
