Belfast man arrested over gun slaying of former IRA commander in Irish republican district

Northern Ireland police say they have arrested a 41-year-old man on suspicion of involvement in the killing of one of Belfast's senior Irish Republican Army veterans.

Detectives declined to provide other details on the man arrested Wednesday in Belfast. Under the terms of British anti-terror legislation, he can be questioned for up to 48 hours before being charged, released or subject to a judge-approved extension of his detention.

An unidentified gunman on Tuesday shot to death Gerard "Jock" Davison as he walked through the Markets, an Irish Catholic neighborhood in south-central Belfast that for decades has been a power base for rival IRA factions. The 47-year-old Davison had been the local commander of the dominant Provisional IRA faction, which renounced violence and disarmed in 2005. No group claimed responsibility.
