Bahrain says it deported Lebanese over Hezbollah links

Published March 14, 2016

Associated Press

Bahrain says it has deported a number of Lebanese citizens living in the tiny island kingdom over their alleged ties to the Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

Bahrain's Interior Ministry made the announcement Monday on Twitter, saying that "several Lebanese residents were deported after it was found that they had links to or were supporters of Hezbollah."

The ministry did not offer a specific number, nor did it elaborate on what evidence it had.

The state-run Bahrain News Agency did not report on the deportations. Lebanese media has said at least seven families were deported in the last week.

The move against Hezbollah comes as the 22-member Arab League of nations last week declared the group a terrorist organization amid a widening dispute between Saudi Arabia and Shiite power Iran.
