Bahamas plans to send home 57 Haitian migrants found aboard sloop near British islands

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Authorities in the Bahamas say they will repatriate 57 Haitian migrants found aboard a sloop near the Caribbean British territory.

Immigration Director Jack Thompson said Wednesday that the 49 men, seven women and one child discovered near Exuma will be sent back to Cap Haitien.

Last week, the U.S. Coast Guard sent home more than 300 Haitians found in two overloaded sailboats in the Bahamas.

Haiti is recovering from a January earthquake that destroyed the capital, left 1.6 million people homeless and killed an estimated 300,000 people.

The Bahamian government briefly suspended repatriations of Haitians after the earthquake.
