Azerbaijan's TV channel shut down over Turkey coup coverage

Published July 29, 2016

A court in Azerbaijan has ordered a local private television station to close because of its coverage of an attempted coup in Turkey earlier this month.

The Court of Appeals in the capital Baku on Friday upheld a motion by the National Council on Television and Radio to strip the ANS station of its broadcasting license. ANS was ordered to provisionally stop broadcasting on July 18 for a month because authorities said its reporting ran counter to "a strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Turkey."

Before it was shut down ANS ran a preview of an interview with U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom the Turkish government accuses of masterminding the plot.

Azerbaijan, a Turkic nation, shares strong ties with Turkey.
