Authorities: 7 die, hundreds evacuated in flooding in remote region in eastern Romania

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

Police say seven people have died and hundreds have been evacuated in eastern Romania as torrential rain caused flash flooding in the remote region overnight.

Police spokeswoman Cristina Tatulici said Thursday that five people drowned and two had heart attacks after flooding hit 12 villages. An 8-year-old child is reported missing. Torrential rain began Wednesday evening and continued overnight.

The interior ministry said authorities rescued 45 people from the floodwaters and evacuated 330 people from their homes.

At least 20 houses were flooded and 10 cars were washed away, national news agency Agerpres reported. Roads in the area were impassable Thursday.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta sent a deputy prime minister to the region and called a government meeting Thursday to discuss the situation.
