Austrian group reports jump in anti-Semitic incidents

Published April 06, 2016

Associated Press

An Austrian organization says that the number of reported anti-Semitic incidents in the country jumped by 82 percent last year compared to 2014.

The Forum Against Anti-Semitism says it received 465 reports of such incidents in 2015 — up from 255 in 2014 and 137 in 2013.

The organization said Wednesday that the incidents included assaults, racist remarks and Internet postings and threats.

Physical violence against Jews dropped with only two cases reported compared to nine in 2014, but Vienna Jewish community leader Oskar Deutsch linked that in part to increase security at Jewish institutions.

The forum says that in many cases it's difficult to specify whether the incidents were the work of right-wing or left-wing extremists, or were linked to Muslim-Jewish tensions.
