Argentina prepares for verdict in dictators' trial

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Verdicts are being prepared in Argentina's historic stolen babies trial. Two former dictators and a handful of other retired military and police officials are accused of systematically stealing babies from leftists who were kidnapped and killed when a military junta ran the country three decades ago.

The sentences are expected Thursday night after a year-and-a-half-long trial. Prosecutors want 50-year sentences for former dictators Jorge Rafael Videla and Reynaldo Bignone.

More than 100 of stolen babies have been able to recover their birth identities through DNA tests, and one such case was added to the trial. Francisco Madariaga testified against his adoptive parents, former army Capt. Victor Gallo and his ex-wife Susana Colombo. He says he hopes they will be convicted, to set an example.
