Another suspected mastermind in Bangladesh attack arrested

Published January 15, 2017

Police have arrested a suspected mastermind of a July attack on a restaurant in Bangladesh's capital as an anti-terror crackdown continues in the South Asian country.

Monirul Islam, head of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said Saturday authorities arrested Jahangir Alam in a raid in Tangail district, 120 kilometers north of the capital, Dhaka, on Friday night.

Islam says Alam was a mastermind.

The July 1 attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery, a popular restaurant frequented by foreigners and wealthy Bangladeshis, left 20 hostages, including 17 foreigners, dead. Five young men from militant group Jumatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh stormed the restaurant and killed them.

At least 40 suspected militants have been killed in police raids since July.
