An international watchdog says Syrian refugees in Lebanon are going without treatment for chronic illnesses like diabetes and cancer because of a shortfall in funding to provide them with medical care.
London-based Amnesty International says the most desperate are compelled to return to their war-ravaged country for treatment.
Amnesty said in a report released Wednesday that the crisis is due to insufficient funds to care for the over 1 million Syrian refugees who have overwhelmed resources in neighboring Lebanon.
Health care in Lebanon is privatized and expensive. The United Nations refugee agency is subsidizing health services for Syrian refugees, but dwindling resources has forced the UNHCR to prioritize primary health care services and treatment of life-threatening illness, while cutting back on other care.
