7 Filipino militants killed, rebel chief hurt in clash

Published March 18, 2016

Associated Press

A Filipino army general says at least seven Abu Sayyaf militants and a soldier have been killed in fierce fighting in the country's south that also wounded a top militant commander wanted by the Philippines and the United States.

Brig. Gen. Allan Arrojado says the clash with about 100 Abu Sayyaf gunmen led by one-armed rebel commander Radulan Sahiron raged for about two hours Friday in a jungle off Patikul town in predominantly Muslim Sulu province.

Arrojado says 16 soldiers and six militants have been wounded, including Sahiron.

The U.S. government has offered $1 million for any information leading to the capture and prosecution of Sahiron, one of the original Abu Sayyaf commanders who has endured years of fighting and has been blamed for several bomb attacks and kidnappings.
