2 Swedish men indicted over 2013 killings in Syria, face terror charges

Published November 23, 2015

Swedish prosecutors have indicted two men in the southwestern city of Goteborg on terrorism charges, also accusing them of two killings in Syria.

Chief Prosecutor Agnetha Hilding Qvarnstrom says the Swedish suspects, ages 30 and 32, are accused of slitting the throats of two men in 2013.

Monday's indictment says photographic and video evidence shows the men carrying out the killings in an industrial area north of Aleppo. Qvarnstrom says the pair, who were arrested in July, also "both expressed joy over the deeds."

Swedish courts may try certain crimes committed abroad if the suspects are apprehended in Sweden. If convicted, both men face a life sentence, which in Sweden generally means a minimum of 20-25 years in prison. The trial opens on Thursday in Goteborg District Court.
