2 bodyguards for Jamaican Parliament member shot at by gunmen in lawmaker's gritty district

Authorities in Jamaica say bodyguards for a Parliament member were shot at by gunmen in his gritty district.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force says the two bodyguards for West Kingston lawmaker Desmond McKenzie were not hit in Tuesday's attack as they waited outside a funeral home where the opposition Jamaica Labor Party legislator held a meeting. The bodyguards apparently returned fire but it is not known if any gunmen were injured.

Police say a Beretta 9-mm pistol with 16 bullets was seized at the scene.

Earlier this month, demonstrators in the Tivoli Gardens slum burned shirts with McKenzie's image. They said the lawmaker was unfairly taking sides in a community feud that has triggered deadly violence by gunmen.
