Wildfire contained in western North Carolina

Forestry officials in western North Carolina say they've contained a fire that burned nearly 9 square miles near Shortoff Mountain in the Pisgah National Forest.

Officials say Tuesday that weekend rain helped firefighters control the flames of the fire that burned near Nebo in McDowell County. Lisa Jennings with the U.S. Forest Service says 1 inch of rain fell on the White Creek fire within a 24-hour period ending Monday morning.

Jennings said the public should still be careful when visiting the area. Jennings said wildfires can create hazards such as holes left by burned tree stumps, damaged trees, and rolling rocks. She said some smoking logs and stumps may remain through the weekend.

No injuries have been reported. The Forest Service says the blaze has cost more than $900,000.
