What We Know: Knife reportedly found at old OJ Simpson home

Published March 04, 2016

Associated Press

A knife that reportedly turned up at O.J. Simpson's former home is being analyzed by Los Angeles police for any possible connection to the 1994 stabbing deaths of Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman. Here's what we know about the discovery:

___

KNIFE EMERGES: The knife was found at Simpson's former home years ago, possibly during demolition of the property, police said. It was turned it over to a now-retired motorcycle police officer who was working as a security guard at a filming location. The knife came to light in the past month, but authorities did not say how, stressing that the authenticity of the account had not been confirmed. The weapon used in the killings has been a mystery for decades.

___

THE SLAYINGS: The killings occurred June 12, 1994. The former football star was acquitted in October 1995 by a jury that deliberated only four hours. In 1997, a civil court jury found Simpson liable for the slayings and awarded millions of dollars to the victims' families.

___

POSSIBLE CRIMINAL CHARGES: The Los Angeles Police Department was looking into whether criminal charges could be filed against the former officer who held onto the knife. As for Simpson, even if the knife is linked to the killings, he is unlikely to be charged again because of legal protections against double jeopardy. Simpson is imprisoned in Nevada for a 2008 armed robbery and kidnapping conviction.
