Virginia transgender student sues school, says he's barred him from using communal restrooms

A transgender teenager in Virginia is suing school officials, saying a policy requiring him to use a private restroom stigmatizes him.

The American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit Thursday against the Gloucester County School Board on behalf of 16-year-old Gavin Grimm in federal court in Newport News. It alleges that school policy stigmatizes Grimm by barring him from restrooms used by other Gloucester High School students.

The complaint says Grimm was born female but has a male gender identity. It says school officials allowed him to use the boys' restroom for almost two months before adopting a policy requiring transgender students to use a private facility.

The lawsuit seeks an order allowing Grimm to use the boys' restrooms.

Gloucester County Attorney Ted Wilmot did not immediately respond to a telephone message.
