Virginia officer charged with murder in off-duty shooting

Published February 05, 2016

Associated Press

A Virginia police officer faces a murder charge in the shooting of an 18-year-old at a car wash.

Chesterfield police say in a statement that a grand jury indicted 47-year-old David Cobb on Wednesday on charges including second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Authorities say Cobb, a Richmond officer, turned himself in Thursday and is held without bond.

Police say Paterson Brown Jr. took Cobb's car from the car wash in suburban Chesterfield in October. Cobb wasn't on duty. He told Brown to exit the car. Police say there was an altercation and Cobb shot Brown.

It's unclear whether Cobb has an attorney to contact for comment.

Chesterfield police spokeswoman Elizabeth Caroon says in an email that Brown was black, and so is Cobb. She says his car wasn't a Richmond police vehicle.

Richmond police didn't immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
