Virginia man to be sentenced in church attack plot

Published June 14, 2016

Associated Press

A Virginia man accused of plotting to shoot up or bomb synagogues and black churches is set to be sentenced in federal court.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled Tuesday for Ronald Chaney III. Chaney pleaded guilty in March to robbery conspiracy and firearm charges.

Prosecutors say Chaney and a co-conspirator, Robert Doyle, are white supremacists who bought guns and explosives from undercover agents. Officials say the two men and another defendant conspired to rob a silver and coin dealer and use the money to finance a race war.

Prosecutors are asking for 12 ½ years in prison. Chaney's attorney is arguing for a lower sentence, saying there's no evidence he agreed to carry out specific acts of violence.

Doyle was sentenced to 17 ½ years in prison.
