A Vietnamese man has been extradited from the United Kingdom to the U.S. to face charges he provided material support to al-Qaida.

Minh Quang Pham made an initial appearance Monday in federal court in New York City. He will be arraigned Wednesday on a 2012 indictment. It accuses him of traveling from the United Kingdom to Yemen in 2010 and receiving training from al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara says Pham spent a half year in Yemen, pledging his support and vowing to wage jihad.

Authorities say he told his wife he was traveling to Ireland when he was actually going to Yemen. United Kingdom authorities arrested Pham at London's Heathrow International Airport when he returned.

A message left with his lawyer was not immediately returned.
