Vegas Strip shooting suspect gets private lawyers; ties with public defenders had soured

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

A self-described pimp accused in the deaths of three people in a shooting and crash on the Las Vegas Strip now has private defense attorneys after his relationship with his public defenders soured.

Judge Kathleen Delaney appointed Robert Langford and Thomas Ericsson on Wednesday to represent 27-year-old Ammar Harris, who faces three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Special Public Defender David Schieck on Monday cut ties with Harris, saying the defendant refused to speak with his legal team and wanted to sue them.

Schieck says Harris wanted his trial held soon, while his lawyers wanted more time.

Harris is accused in the Feb. 21 shooting death of aspiring rapper Kenneth Cherry Jr. The slaying touched off a fiery wreck that killed a cab driver and his passenger.
