A former Wisconsin student says illustrating her chemistry thesis in a comic book helped her share the work with her family and friends as well as a host of others interested in accessible science.
Veronica Berns, who was working on her Ph. D. in chemistry at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, said she long struggled to explain her work to nonscientists. As she began drafting her thesis on a strange subset of crystals, Berns quickly concluded that she would be best able to describe the oddball compounds with illustrations.
And her professor agreed. Danny Fredrickson, a chemistry professor at the university, said Berns found a way to provide context to the science and to make it more accessible.
Berns also launched a blog that illustrates other scientists' discoveries.
