Police officers from around Utah came out to support a slain officer's son at the boy's first hockey game without his father.

The Deseret News reports that hundreds of officers showed up at Acord Ice Arena in West Valley City on Saturday to cheer on 13-year-old Jack Barney.

Unified police Officer Douglas Barney was fatally shot Jan. 17 by an ex-convict who fled the scene of a traffic accident.

The married father of three teenage children had been working an overtime shift to pay off medical bills for cancer treatment.

His wife, Erika Barney, says the support from the community and officers has meant everything for her family.

She says her husband loved to watch their son play hockey.

Funeral services for Barney will be held Monday.
