US will expand, improve support for Iraq's Mosul operation

Top defense officials said U.S. forces are likely to do more to help Iraq retake Mosul from the Islamic State militants than they did in the recapture of Ramadi in December.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter told reporters the U.S. will take a more active role in the Mosul campaign. He mentioned providing more logistics support for Iraqi combat forces and helping put up temporary bridges that allow Iraqi assault forces to move into the city.

Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the operation to retake Mosul will be bigger than Ramadi. He and Carter told Pentagon reporters that the military support the U.S. plans to provide will be both bigger in scale and broader in the types of advice and assistance given.
