US stocks open lower, putting market on track for a third loss in a row; General Mills down

Stocks are heading lower in early trading, putting the market on course for its third loss in a row.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 41 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,000 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time Wednesday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost seven points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,965. The Nasdaq composite fell 18 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,475.

General Mills fell 1 percent after the company said it would cut up to 800 jobs, the second time it's reduced its work force in a month. The company is struggling as Americans eat fewer boxed and frozen meals.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.45 percent.
