US stock market slips in early trading following best day in 5 weeks

U.S. stocks are opening slightly lower a day after the market notched its best performance in five weeks.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 83 points, or 0.5 percent, to 17,812 as of 9:33 am. Eastern time Friday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell seven points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,058. The Nasdaq composite fell 11 points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,882.

All 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 index fell. Stocks of utility companies declined the most.

Bonds barely moved. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note stood at 2.12 percent, the same as late Thursday.
