US religious freedom commission says India blocks visit

Published March 03, 2016

Associated Press

A federal commission on religious freedom says India has failed to grant it visas to visit the country.

A three-member delegation from the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom wanted to make a one-week visit starting Friday to meet with government officials, religious leaders and activists in the cities of New Delhi and Mumbai.

The commission provides policy recommendations to the U.S. administration and Congress. It says it has been prevented from visiting India two other times.

Chairman Robert George is expressing deep disappointment, saying Thursday that he would expect democratic India to allow for more transparency.

The Indian Embassy has not immediately responded to requests for comment.

The chief U.S. envoy on combating human trafficking also has been barred from visiting in November despite warming U.S.-India ties.
