Published June 22, 2016

The head of United Nations agency is condemning the death of a freelance journalist in Texas whose body was found with a gunshot wound in the back yard of a home.

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said Wednesday from Paris that authorities must determine the motive for the killing of Spanish-language journalist Jacinto Torres Hernandez. He was a longtime reporter for La Estrella who used the byline Jay Torres.

His body was found June 13 in the Dallas suburb of Garland, Investigators say he had been dead for "multiple days."

Family members say the 57-year-old Torres had worked on stories such as human trafficking that could place him in danger.

They tell the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he was at the Garland home as part of his other work flipping homes.
