Unclear how end of private prison use will impact Texas

Published August 19, 2016

Associated Press

It's unclear how the Obama administration's decision to phase out its use of some private prisons will ultimately impact the five such facilities operating in Texas as well as the communities where they're located.

But some of the private prison companies that operate these facilities said Friday they're hopeful contracts up for renewal in the next few months to continue running several of the prisons in Texas will be approved.

The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday instructed the Bureau of Prisons to start reducing "and ultimately ending" its use of private prisons.

The federal prison population is at 193,299.

Private prisons hold about 22,100 of these inmates. Texas has more than 9,300 of such inmates — more than any other state in the U.S.
