Trial of 'The Vanishing Women' case underway in Ohio

Published July 13, 2016

Associated Press

A trial is underway for a man accused of fatally shooting a woman whose slaying is one of several deaths and disappearances that have troubled a southern Ohio city.

Thirty-eight-year-old convicted sex offender Jason McCrary is charged with murder in the May 2015 shooting death of Timberly Claytor.

During opening statements on Tuesday, defense attorney Gregory Meyers proclaimed McCrary's innocence.

Police say McCrary shot Claytor three times in the head and left her body next to an abandoned building in Massieville, about 50 miles south of the state capital of Columbus.

The case has been featured in "The Vanishing Women," a nationally-televised documentary focusing on the unsolved cases of five Ross County women who either disappeared or were found dead.

Meyers says McCrary plans to testify during the trial.
