Trial delayed for Mississippi dad in baby's hot car death

Published August 12, 2016

Associated Press

A manslaughter trial is delayed until January for a Mississippi man charged in the hot-car death of his baby.

A circuit judge filed an order for the delay Thursday, saying the Joshua Blunt's Aug. 18 trial date won't work because the judge will be hearing another case. Grenada County's next court term is in January.

Blunt's attorney, Carlos Moore, said Friday he might request a special court term before then.

Blunt's daughter, 8-month-old Shania Rihanna Caradine, died May 18 after being found unconscious in Blunt's car, where she had been left while he worked.

Grand jurors in another Mississippi county decided this week not to indict a white mother whose 2-year-old died in a hot car. Moore says he believes Blunt is being treated more harshly because Blunt is black.
