The Latest: Waffle House hero raises $227,000 for victims

The Latest on the shooting at a Tennessee Waffle House (all times local):

A man who has been hailed as a hero for wrestling an assault-style rifle away from a gunman at a Tennessee Waffle House has raised more than a quarter of a million dollars for the victims of the shooting.

After being credited for snatching the rifle away from the gunman, 29-year-old James Shaw Jr. began raising money for the victims through GoFundMe. In a statement sent Monday, Shaw announced he's collected $227,000.

Police said four people were killed in the April 22 attack. Shaw and three others were injured.

Shaw said he's thankful for the outpouring of support.

He said the fund will be closed on May 13 and the Nashville office of financial services firm UBS will distribute the money to the families.

11:13 a.m.

A man accused of killing four people by opening fire outside a Waffle House and storming the restaurant is due in court.

Travis Reinking is facing multiple charges, including four counts of criminal homicide. It is not clear if he will attend the hearing set for Monday or if there will be any testimony.

Online records of the Davidson County Sheriff's Office show he is being held without bond in a secure area of the Metro Nashville Jail.

Police say Reinking was nearly naked and wearing only a green jacket when he was shooting people with an AR-15 rifle inside and outside the restaurant. Authorities said four other people were injured, including a man who wrestled the gun away from Reinking.

Reinking's lawyer has not returned an email seeking comment.
