The Latest: Police say friend's dog fatally mauled Vegas boy

The Latest on a fatal dog mauling of a Las Vegas child (all times local):

11 a.m.

Police in Las Vegas say a dog that fatally mauled a 9-year-old boy was a family pet at a house the boy was visiting.

Police Officer Jesse Roybal said Thursday the child died at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center of injuries received in the dog attack about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at a home in a neighborhood near Desert Inn Road and Hollywood Boulevard. That's about 8 miles east of downtown.

The boy's name wasn't immediately made public.

Roybal says animal control officers took custody of the dog, which was described as a pit bull.

He says detectives are investigating what happened before the attack.

Las Vegas police say a child has died from injuries after being attacked by a pit bull.

Lt. Timothy Hatchett says a child visiting a friend's house Wednesday afternoon when the family's pet pit bull attacked. The child was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and died there.

Hatchett says detectives were still on scene Wednesday night. Animal control took custody of the dog.

It's not clear how old or which gender the child was.
