Family and friends of Shannon Johnson have gathered at a church in rural Georgia to remember the 45-year-old man credited with saving the life of a co-worker during the shooting attack in San Bernardino, California, earlier this month.

Johnson was sitting next to co-worker Denise Peraza at a holiday luncheon for San Bernardino County environmental health employees on Dec. 2 when a pair of attackers with assault rifles began spraying bullets.

Peraza has said Johnson shielded her from the hail of bullets and saved her life. She was shot in the back but survived.

A funeral for Johnson was to get underway at Calvary Baptist Church in the rural southeast town of Jesup on Saturday morning.
