The Latest: Lawyer calls for US inquiry in Denver jail death

Published January 21, 2016

The latest on prosecutors' decision not to file charges against Denver sheriff's deputies in the death of a black, homeless inmate (all times local):

3:40 p.m.

An attorney for the family of an inmate who died in a Denver jail is calling for a federal investigation after local prosecutors declined to file charges against the deputies involved.

Darold Kilmer said Thursday the decision not to prosecute anyone in the death of 50-year-old Michael Marshall was "an outrage."

Marshall suffocated Nov. 11 while six deputies restrained him while he had a psychotic episode.

District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said earlier Thursday the deputies used necessary force and weren't trying to hurt him.

But Kilmer said a jail videotape of the incident released Thursday showed it was an "aggressive, excessively forceful response."
