Texas mom pleads guilty to locking child in closet

Published November 17, 2014

A Texas mother has pleaded guilty to locking her 12-year-old daughter in a closet every day after school for about a year, only letting her out to use the restroom and eat.

Leticia Ines was sentenced to one year in prison but could be free in two weeks. State District Judge Leonel Alejenadro on Monday sentenced the 41-year-old mother to time served, meaning she could be released by March 1.

Ines pleaded guilty to one count of injury to a child. She was arrested last year after authorities say she confined her daughter in a closet inside the family's home in Brownsville, South Texas.

According to The Brownsville Herald, an attorney for Ines told the court the girl was locked up for her own protection because she had psychological issues.
