Texas fugitive climbs out 20th story window in Denver before being found stuck in trash chute

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

A man who escaped from a federal prison in Texas is in jail in Denver after trying to get away from his captors by climbing out a 20th story window.

U.S. Marshals say 30-year-old Donnie Lee Griffin of Tampa, Fla., was arrested Wednesday after task force members went to an apartment linked to him. They saw that someone had used sheets to escape out of the window. A resident on the floor below said a man passed through that apartment and ran down the stairs. Authorities locked down the building and searched it, eventually finding Griffin stuck in the trash chute.

Griffin escaped from FCI La Tuna in Anthony, Texas, in September. The next month, the Orlando Sentinel published his obituary, but authorities say they continued to track his aliases.
