Teen involved in crash during police chase has died

Published June 21, 2016

Associated Press

Police say a teenager is dead after being thrown from a truck that was fleeing from deputies in East Tennessee who were investigating a report of a robbery.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Noah Click told media outlets Tuesday that the girl had died. The crash report identified her as 14-year-old Lacey Briggs.

Police say the chase began Monday after Unicoi County deputies spotted a truck that had been reported stolen from a man who said he was beaten and robbed. Sheriff Mike Hensley said deputies followed protocol during the pursuit, which ended when the truck crashed.

Two boys in the truck were treated at a hospital before being taken to a juvenile facility. Hensley said they will face charges including especially aggravated robbery, burglary and theft.
