Published March 15, 2016

Associated Press

Authorities say a police officer in Texas has been wounded in a shootout with two men, one of whom was killed.

Authorities are searching for the other suspect.

Authorities said the incident began Tuesday when Fort Worth police officers asked a suspected fugitive to pull over his vehicle. The suspect and a passenger drove off, then fled on foot into a wooded area.

Police were pursuing the men when gunfire was exchanged.

Fort Worth police spokeswoman Corporal Tracey Knight said one suspect was declared dead at the scene. Law enforcement fanned out across the wooded area looking for the other suspect.

Knight said the wounded officer was taken to a downtown hospital. Matt Zavadsky, a spokesman for the emergency mobile healthcare provider Medstar, said the officer is in critical condition.
