Suspect in shopping mall baby kidnapping to claim insanity

Published July 22, 2016

Associated Press

A suburban Philadelphia woman charged with kidnapping a newborn from a shopping mall plans to use an insanity defense.

The (West Chester) Daily Local News (http://bit.ly/29ZY2sg ) reports attorneys for Cherie Amoore have filed court documents laying out their plans.

Amoore has told police she gave birth to a baby who died after only a few hours in February and she just wanted to hold a baby again.

But her attorneys claim the 32-year-old Tredyffrin woman suffered from mental problems relating to a false pregnancy and subsequent depression.

Police say she struck up a conversation with the baby's mother at the King of Prussia mall in March and took the boy when the mother was distracted with another child.

The boy was found unharmed at Amoore's nearby apartment.
