Survival skills kick in for flood victims in Pa.

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

Survivors of rush-hour flash floods in Pittsburgh swam to the roofs of their vehicles, held onto heavy items to keep from being swept away or took other actions to survive the rushing waters that took the lives of at least three people.

Marion Marty tells KDKA-TV (http://cbsloc.al/qy64qD) that she grabbed onto a truck after the waters sucked her from her submerged car Friday evening. She says the water was rushing so fast, "it kind of just dragged me right out."

Authorities say flash floods sank more than a dozen vehicles in Pittsburgh, killing a woman and her two young daughters and leaving a 70-year-old woman missing and presumed dead. Paramedics in boats plucked people from water 9- to 10-feet high.
