Subway fare evasion leads to lost baby in Philadelphia, transit officials say

Philadelphia transit officials say a mother and grandmother left behind a baby while trying to avoid paying full subway fare.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority says it happened Monday on the Market-Frankford El. The Philadelphia Daily News reports the unnamed adults had a single, one-day convenience pass that allows one person to take eight rides.

SEPTA spokeswoman Heather Redfern says a cashier punched the pass and allowed the mother to enter. She handed the pass to the grandmother, who was going to use it at another station to avoid suspicion.

But Redfern says they accidentally left the baby behind and didn't realize it until they got to the next station.

A cashier kept the baby inside the booth to keep warm. The women were reunited with the child and Redfern says they won't be cited.
