Suburban Chicago school district keeps in place deal over locker room for transgender student

Published May 03, 2016

Associated Press

A suburban Chicago school district has reaffirmed a deal with federal officials over a transgender student's use of a girls' locker room.

Palatine-based Township High School District 211 and the Education Department's Civil Rights Office reached the agreement last week allowing access for the student, who was born male but identifies as female.

But both sides have bickered about the deal's exact meaning since then.

The school board held a meeting Monday night, during which it took public testimony on the issue and could have considered rescinding the agreement. But the Chicago Tribune reports (http://trib.in/1NCTitp ) the board left it in place.

Board President Mucia Burke says the district is installing privacy curtains in the locker rooms "with the assurance that this student will use them."

Rescinding the agreement could have led to the loss of federal funds.
