Strike closes Philly-area Catholic high schools

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

Roman Catholic high schools in the Philadelphia area will be closing for the duration of a teachers strike now entering its second week.

The archdiocese of Philadelphia announced that high schools serving more than 16,000 students will be shuttered beginning Wednesday.

School began last week despite the strike because students were mainly involved in orientation activities. But school officials said Tuesday that continued reduced staffing could jeopardize student safety.

The strike began Sept. 6 after teachers rejected a contract proposal that they said threatens their job security.

Church officials say the contract needs to be modernized to give students a 21st-century education.

The two sides are set to resume negotiations on Tuesday afternoon.
