Son of Suriname's president pleads guilty in New York after US terrorism sting

The son of the president of Suriname has pleaded guilty to charges he sought to offer a home base in his South American country to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Dino Bouterse entered the plea on Friday in federal court in New York.

Bouterse was arrested last year in Panama and extradited to the United States following an elaborate sting operation.

Prosecutors say Bouterse agreed to accept a multimillion-dollar payoff in exchange for allowing large numbers of Hezbollah fighters to use Suriname as a base for attacking American targets.

He faces a sentence of 15 years to life at his sentencing on Jan. 6.
