Some California residents rely on bottled water as wells run dry amid historic drought

Officials say hundreds of domestic wells in California's drought-parched Central Valley have run dry, leaving many residents to rely on donated bottles of drinking water.

Tulare County spokeswoman Denise England said wells sustaining about 290 families in East Porterville are depleted; there are many more empty wells throughout the farming region, but nobody has a precise count.

With California locked in its third year of drought, Girl Scouts are collecting donated water, while local charities are searching for money to install tanks next to homes.

Elva Beltran of the charity Porterville Area Coordinating Council says another family comes in every day for help.

Resident Yolanda Serrato says her family's well dried up two months ago; all she wants is to get a glass of water from the kitchen sink.
