Somali man gets 30 years for US ship attack

A Somali national who admitted his role in an April 10 attack on a U.S. Navy ship off the coast of Africa has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Jama Idle Ibrahim was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Norfolk, Va., on three charges: an attack to plunder a vessel, an act of violence against persons on a vessel, and use of a firearm during a crime of violence.

He entered a guilty plea to the charges in August for his role in the attack on the USS Ashland, a Virginia-based amphibious dock landing ship.

A federal judge dismissed piracy charges against Ibrahim and five other Somali defendants in August but left the remaining charges intact. The five other men face trial.

Under Ibrahim's plea agreement, he will cooperate with the government in that trial.
